A day before tickets were made available to the general public, Ticketmaster abruptly canceled its public sale for Taylor Swift’s “The Eras Tour,” following several issues with pre-sale events and “historically unprecedented” demand. .
Citing “high demand” and “insufficient remaining ticket inventory”, the ticketing site announced on Twitter that it had canceled Friday’s event.
The news follows a series of issues for Swift fans who tried to purchase pre-sale tickets earlier this week.
Tuesday’s presale event, one of many, left millions of fans queuing for hours after Ticketmaster said it was experiencing “technical difficulties”.
“Our team is working to resolve this issue as soon as possible,” an update on Ticketmaster’s website said Tuesday. “We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience.”
The company later issued a statement saying the long wait times and disruptions were the result of “unprecedented demand with millions of people showing up to buy tickets for the TaylorSwiftTix presale,” but acknowledged on Thursday that the attacks robots had also played a role.
“Historically working with verified fan invite codes has worked as we have been able to manage the volume coming into the site to buy tickets. ‘had no invite Codes drove unprecedented traffic to our site, driving a total of 3.5 billion system requests, 4 times our previous peak,’ the company noted in a blog post on Thursday. Never before has a verified fan on sale garnered so much attention – or unsolicited volume. This disrupted the predictability and reliability that characterizes our verified fan platform.”
So it’s no surprise that some of those who got tickets chose to put them on resale markets with hefty price tags, ranging from $500 to over $12,000.
On Wednesday afternoon, the cheapest resale ticket for Swift’s June 2 show in Chicago at Soldier Field — the first of three shows in the city — was listed at $518 on StubHub after fees. This ticket would be in the 35th row of section 444, positioned on the upper deck almost directly to the side of the stage.
Including ticket fees on StubHub, there were only 17 listings under $1,000 for Swift’s opening show in Chicago, with the cheapest listing on the lot at $1,121.
And while pre-sale events for select shows continue through Thursday, the general public was not supposed to have the opportunity to purchase tickets at face value until Friday. But not anymore.
Swift’s 52-date stadium tour is scheduled to run from March 17 to August 9, 2023 across the United States and is also expected to span international dates.
The tour announcement followed Swift’s release of her 10th album, “Midnights.”
